Wu creates a historic moment by becoming the inaugural Chinese ATP Tour champion following his triumph in Dallas
In the Dallas Open, Wu Yibing achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the inaugural Chinese player to secure an ATP Tour title, triumphing over John Isner.
Wu Yibing emerged victorious at the Dallas Open, triumphing over a relentless onslaught from John Isner, and etching his name in history as the inaugural Chinese male to claim an ATP Tour championship.
In a thrilling match that lasted nearly three hours, the young player hailing from Hangzhou, displayed remarkable resilience by saving four match points. Eventually, he emerged victorious with a score of 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (14/12), securing his first-ever ATP triumph.
Wu, who has experienced a remarkable ascent in the global rankings over the past year, climbing from 1,869th position to an impressive 97th in the world, joyfully collapsed on the court after securing his triumph.
After a thrilling clash with the formidable Isner, who unleashed a relentless onslaught of 44 aces throughout the match, it finally emerged victorious.
Isner fell just one ace short of matching the all-time record for aces in a three-set ATP Tour match, which stands at 45 and was set by Ivo Karlovic in 2015.
After the loss, Isner acknowledged Wu's impressive performance.
Isner missed out on an opportunity to secure his 17th title as he failed to convert a match point in the second set while leading 30-40 and 6-5 on Wu's serve, leaving him with regret.
Isner's opportunity to dominate the court was squandered when he failed to successfully return the ball, resulting in it hitting the net. Wu, taking advantage of this mistake, managed to survive and eventually equalize the score by winning the tie-break. This set the stage for an intense final match.
Despite both players' efforts, neither was able to secure a service break in the first two sets. This trend persisted in the third set, resulting in another tie-breaker as the game went serve.
Isner was presented with another chance to win the match when he gained a 6/5 advantage in the breaker, yet once more he failed to capitalize on it.
Both competitors managed to stave off match points amidst the escalating tension, until Wu finally secured his fifth match point at 13-12 during the tie-breaker on Isner's serve.
Wu executed a brilliant backhanded return of Isner's wide serve, which allowed him to gain momentum. As a result, Isner's forehand went high and long, leading to Wu's triumph.
Wu's victory marks yet another remarkable achievement for him, as he has now become the inaugural Chinese player to advance to the third round of the US Open.
After a triumphant junior career, which included being a semi-finalist in the Australian Open singles in 2017, Wu has now made his mark in the professional ranks. He also secured the boys singles title at the US Open in the same year.
